The Raman and IR microspectroscopy laboratory is equipped with a LabRam IR – Horiba Jobin Yvon instrument, purchased through a financing from the Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze.

Description of the techniques

Raman Spectroscopy
Raman spectroscopy employs a quantum phenomenon (the Raman effect) which consists in the diffusion, by various materials, of a light radiation (emitted by a laser source) at different frequencies than that of the incident monochromatic beam.
This spectroscopy is therefore a non-destructive technique, since the material being studied is subjected to the action of a light source with no prior treatment (neither chemical nor physical) of the sample.
Finally, the presence of a motorized table allows to obtain Raman maps.

FTIR Spectroscopy
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) is a particularly useful technique for investigating the chemical bonds existing within materials. When an infrared photon hits a molecule, it can induce a change from a fundamental state to an excited vibrational state. Since the changes between vibrational states are typical of certain bonds and substances, this technique allows the recognition of many substances.
The instrument operates in reflection both in the attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) mode and in the specular or diffuse reflection mode.

General applications

The two techniques, which are markedly complementary, are capable of analyzing organic and inorganic substances in the solid or liquid state.

Applications:
- Geological and planetary samples
 - Cultural Heritage
 - Biological findings
 - Biomedical materials
 - Glass
 - Polymers.

The Raman and IR microspectroscopy laboratory provides the instrument and the highly qualified personnel, not only for traditional research facilities, but also for companies and professional categories, as well as for teaching.
