Accessibility

Free Admission to the Museums and Botanical Garden is guaranteed to persons with disabilities and their possible carers.

The Museum of Geology and Palaeontology and the Botanical Garden are at the ground floor and are completely accessible to wheelchairs. The Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology and the museum ‘La Specola’ are spread over several floors. Upper floors can be reached by wheelchair-accessible lifts.

Guide dogs for visual impaired visitors are welcome.

The Botanical Garden and Museums can be reached by bus and cabs, as well as by one’s own means of transport.

Reception and services

Ticket offices at the Botanical Garden and Museums also serves as information points. Visitors with particular needs are encouraged to contact the educational service office prior to their visit.

Multilingual information materials are available at the entrance to the Botanical Garden and Museums. At the Botanical Garden an orientation map is distributed at the ticket office.

At the Botanical Garden and Museums of Palaeontology and ‘La Specola’ self-service lockers are available for free.

Restrooms are wheelchair accessible. At the Botanical Garden they are located inside the Garden; at the Museums of Palaeontology and Museum of Anthropology they are located outside the exhibition halls; at ‘La Specola’ one accessible restroom is located outside the exhibition halls (in the courtyard) and one soon after the entrance of the Mineralogical collection at the first floor.

Within the exhibition itineraries there is seating available.

At the Museum of Palaeontology and at the Botanical Garden hot beverage and freshwater dispensers are available.

The Museum of Palaeontology is equipped with an air-conditioning system.

Experiences 

Gardens and Museums are places that invite silence and are designed to avoid sudden lighting and noise for the comfort of all visitors, including people with autistic spectrum disorder.

In the Museum of Geology and Palaeontology, a selection of original fossils can be touched and are provided with explanations in Braille script (in Italian).

At the Botanical Garden a guided tour by electric car can be reserved by people with mobility or visual impairment. Other options are also available upon request, as for example a multisensorial guided tour. More information and reservation by calling or emailing the educational services.

The entire museum system participates in the network Musei Welcome Firenze and organises guided tours, events, and workshops for all audiences (e.g Tactum and ‘La scienza di vedere con le mani’). To keep up to date on events, exhibitions, tours, and educational activities, you can subscribe to our newsletter.

Amateur photography without flash and video recording are welcome. Please, share on social media by entering the hashtag @instaSMA. Respect for the privacy of the other visitors is required. For professional filming and photography a written authorization is required.

Museum Shops

In all Museums and at the Botanical Garden there are Museum shops to purchase a memento of the experience and support the University Museum System.
