'La Specola' gets a makeover

Promotion and enhancement works of the Network of Major Cultural Museums. Valorization of the museum heritage of the Museum of Natural History of the University of Florence - Functional reorganization of the 'La Specola' Complex

In September 2019 the Museum 'La Specola' closes to the public to allow for redevelopment works of the historic headquarters.

The re-qualification project

The structural and functional redevelopment of the 'La Specola' headquarters of the Museum of Natural History of the University of Florence, to be implemented with the support of the European Union, will allow the Museum to expand its mission with the increase of the exhibition area and to guarantee a more varied offer that goes beyond the usual didactic-educational activities with educational workshops designed also for our younger visitors, activities for families and for different audiences using innovative digital tools to stimulate interest and curiosity aimed at intensifying the use of material and immaterial historical and scientific heritage.

The redevelopment will involve, in particular, the main structure on the first floor with an extension and adaptation of the new exhibition spaces to accommodate the mineralogy collection, currently in Via La Pira and not open to the public. The mammals collection will be relocated to adjacent spaces connected with the main site, which is undergoing functional reorganization together with the new deposit of the study collections of mammals in the former Hall 2 on the ground floor. The project entails also an extension of the exhibition spaces on the second floor to display the collection of botanical wax that is not currently accessible; a refurbishment of the spaces on the second mezzanine floor to accommodate part of the ornithological collection. On the ground floor the refurbishments will cover the entire surface, which will house the Reception: ticket office and bookshop, resting area and access control, cafeteria and spaces for temporary exhibitions of reproductions of museum specimen.

Goals

The new 'La Specola' will be a reference point for art, culture and research not only region-wide but also at national and international level.

The multi-year programs of cultural activities will define the renewed operational plan of the Museum aimed at promoting and preserving the particularity of the historical-scientific message and the emotions resulting from the new vision.
