PREMUDE, environments and objects

The project

Innovative models for PREventive storage in MUseum environments and post-emergency temporary storage (DEposits): PREMUDE. The project proposes the definition of an innovative methodological path for the measurement and control of the quality of the conservation environments, aimed at preserving the cultural heritage item  in its various aspects (tangible, intangible, and functional), reducing the risk of damage, to guarantee the accessibility and enhancement of the cultural and economic properties of the item.

Research grant holders with the PREMUDE project are Chiara Manfriani and Giovanni Gualdani, with the scientific supervision of Marco Fioravanti, professor of the Department of Agriculture, Food, Environmental, and Forestry (DAGRI).

By applying the logic provided for by the UNI EN 15757 standard, the model to be developed is based on the determination of the “historical climate”, with the verification of the state of conservation of the manufactured articles in relation to this climate, and the subsequent evaluation of the corrective effects to be introduced in the preservation and public display environments by means of innovative technologies. This research methodology is applied in the context of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology of the University of Florence, where some finds of important conservative and historical-cultural interest have been identified.

In the words of Maria Gloria Roselli, curator of the collections of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology, "(...) the opportunity to have an assessment of the fragile state of the collections induced by time and, consequently, the possible evaluation of conservative interventions greatly helps the work of the Museum operator and the curator.”

The project is funded by the Region of Tuscany (POR ESF 2014 – 2020 axis A Employment – Investment priorities A.2 – Objective A.2.1 – Action A.2.1.7 “RESEARCH GRANTS IN THE CULTURAL FIELD”), by the Museum of Natural History of the University of Florence, the Cassa di Risparmio Foundation in Florence and the Cooperative “Opera dʼarte”.
