PalVirt, Virtual Paleontology

PaleontologiaVirtuale

The project

“PalVirt” is Virtual Paleontology, a 3D digitization project of paleontological finds from the Museum of Geology and Paleontology of the University of Florence. It is a non-invasive approach for the fruition, diffusion and sharing of the paleontological patrimony. Ancient and delicate finds are transformed into digital objects, with original geometries and colors, for new scientific and museum applications.

Research Assignee with the PalVirt project is Saverio Bartolini Lucenti, who in the video presents his research activity.
In the words of Lorenzo Rook, Professor of the Department of Earth Sciences and member of the Scientific Council of the University Museum System, “the project concerns the branch of paleontology that studies fossils thanks to the acquisition, processing and analysis of digital images obtained with computerized tomography, like those used in diagnostic-medical field, or with surface scans thus obtaining three-dimensional models”.

Funding

PalVirt is funded by the Region of Tuscany (POR ESF 2014 – 2020 axis A Employment – Investment priority A.2 – Objective A.2.1 – Action A.2.1.7 “RESEARCH GRANTS IN THE CULTURAL FIELD”) and by the Museum of Natural History of the University of Florence.
