“Linda.” is an interactive web platform focused on fossils found in Farneta (Arezzo, Tuscany) and dating back to around 1.6 Ma, created within the PNNR CN 5 Spoke 7 and National Biodiversity Future Center.
The history of this paleontological site, from its formation to the excavation campaigns of the 1970s, accompanies the public on a journey through time and through the collections of the Museum of Geology and Paleontology of Florence and the Paleontology Exhibition of Farneta. “Linda” is the name of the project's mascot, a Mammuthus meridionalis discovered in 1973. Near the skeleton, the remains of many other animals emerged, testifying to the great biodiversity of vertebrates of the time. The Farneta faunal association includes large and medium-sized cervids, Praemegaceros obuscurus and Pseududama fartensis, equids Equus stenonis and Equus altidens, a species of rhinoceros Stephanorhinus etruscus, a species of European jaguar Panthera gombaszoegensis and the large short-snouted hyena Pachycrocuta brevirostris.
Through QR codes, simply using a smartphone, the visitor can access information on the species, paleoartistic illustrations of the animals and their environment and he can explore a reconstruction of the excavation with curiosity and scientific insights.
The project is aimed at connecting visitors, scholars, museums and the territory even remotely, enhancing and making museum collections more easily accessible.
